Abstract: To ensure and guarantee the reliability of lifting structures and equipment, mechanics need effective control tools to determine the condition and lifetime of these structures. This study is designed to estimate the reliability and damage of the wire rope from the behavior of its components (wires, strand, layers) and to find an analytical model that generalizes the behavior of the whole wire rope. It is also designed to establish the relationship between damage and reliability in the case of compound systems.

Key words: wire rope, reliability, damage life fraction, tensile tests, fracture energy
